Alexander Zonjic – Doin’
the D
Flutist
Alexander Zonjic is a legend in
Detroit
(the “D”), where he’s been a mainstay in the jazz scene for
over
three decades. And he pays homage to his adopted
hometown in the title of his newest CD on the Heads Up
International label. Working with a fine cast of players
including
Kenny G,
Rick Braun,
Bob James,
Jeff Lorber
and Chieli
Minucci,
he serves up a mostly upbeat set, ranging from the bouncy
Summer cut, “Top Down,” to the guitar-laden “Passion
Island.” But he modifies the tempo nicely on the pretty
“Little Sunflower” and on the cut most likely to appeal to
soul music
fans, a cover of the Guess Who’s “Undun” with
Maysa
handling vocals.
Doin’
the D comes at just the right time for Summer
cruising down Woodward Avenue and is a welcome addition to
Zonjic’s formidable discography. Recommended.
